President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has cautioned traditional and cultural institutions against engaging in partisan politics, emphasizing their core role in promoting indigenous culture, peace, and unity.
Speaking yesterday during the 31st coronation anniversary of Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I of Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom in Hoima City, President Museveni reminded cultural leaders that their restored status under the NRM government was meant to serve as a unifying force, not a political one.
He traced Uganda’s historical lineage to the ancient Bachwezi dynasty, which once unified a large part of the country.
Following its collapse, several smaller kingdoms emerged, each playing a vital role in clan cohesion and cultural preservation.
President Museveni further encouraged cultural institutions to use returned properties, such as former sub-county administrative units to generate income and reduce reliance on government funding.
Meanwhile, Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Andrew Byakutaga, raised a security concern, urging the government to address the continued attacks on Ugandan fishermen by suspected militia from the Democratic Republic of Congo on Lake Albert.
Meanwhile Omukama Ruhanga Owobusobozi Bisaka the founder of the Faith of Unity has called on the Ugandan government to declare June 11th a national public holiday in recognition of indigenous religions and their growing role in national identity and spiritual liberation.
The appeal was made during his 96th birthday celebration and thanksgiving ceremony at the newly inaugurated Kapyemi International Prayer Grounds in Kagadi.
He also called for formal recognition of Kapyemi Prayer Grounds as a national religious site, citing its significance in spiritual mobilization and international reach, with followers in countries including DR Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Sierra Leone, and Germany.
President Museveni, who attended the ceremony, applauded the Faith of Unity for its contribution to national cohesion and morality.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding freedom of worship and urged faith leaders to instill discipline, unity and hard work in their communities.
